What can I bring into the military with me?

I heard that after boot camp you can bring some personal effects with you, ipods, phones and the like. I have even heard of people bringing a pocket knife or combat knife of sorts, I know this sounds silly and weird, but what about a short sword? Its kinda a family heirloom and I would hate to part with it... In case it matters its about 2 and a half feet long.
