What is the best heirloom handgun?

I wanted to get my husband an heirloom gun and was thinking about a nickel plated colt 1911a1 w/ pearl grips or something along that line and was gonna get it engraved, but after reading posts about the quality I'm kinda deciding against it. Does anyone have any other ideas about a great gun to get? no revolvers please.
