What legal action should I take? (theft)?

I moved into an apartment with a friend and it was going well for a few months until I decided to move out for financial reasons. On my last night in the apartment, I went into my room to finish packing and I noticed that my laptop was missing. There were also several items from my closet missing. There were also some family heirlooms that were taken. The roommate was no where to be found. She was angry because I was leaving and we were on bad terms. We have worked things out since then and tonight I asked her where the items were, and she said that while I was gone to work she had her friends come over and they took my computer and clothing. She said she couldn't afford to live in the apartment anymore after I left,and decided to move in with her friends. When they came over to help her pack, they took my items. Can I press charges? Can I take them to court? How should I proceed?
