Saving seeds from heirloom tomatoes?

I was talking to someone about saving the seeds from my heirloom tomatoes and they mentioned something about if it's not done right the tomatoes I grow will have no taste. Something about cross-pollination. I planted the seeds and they are growing great. Has anyone ever heard of this potential problem?
